Community EnvironmentTitle: Mr. Paos Classroom Community Area: Community Environment Skills demonstrated (summary from focus groups activities): Knowledge of skills to solve problems involving: staff and student diversity (does it reflect the community). Vignette: Please read the following scenarios and answer the questions as completely as possible. We are looking for depth in your responses so please "Show what you know." Paos Classroom CommunityPao is a middle school teacher for an inner-city school located within a diverse community. The community is experiencing some turmoil between ethnic and cultural groups. One of the biggest problems, however, has to do with the economic disparity in the community. There appears to be a big gap between the "haves" and the "have-nots" and approximately 1/3 of the students in the school are economically disadvantaged. During the first 6 weeks of class, Pao notices friction between these two economic groups in his classroom as well as in the school. There do not appear to be many cognitive differences, but Pao has identified verbal and non-verbal behavior that has created a division in the classroom that is detrimental to optimal learning. Pao talked to the principal and the counselor about the problem to no avail. When he asked other teachers about the problem, he received responses like "yea, it happens all the time."
