Multicultural Diversity
Assessment Dissemination Project

Indiana State University

Description of University

ISU has more than 11,000 students and offers more than 125 majors.  Minority students comprise 13.95% of the undergraduate population.  The college of education has about 1000 undergraduate students with about 75% of them majoring in Elementary and Early Childhood Education.  Original goals/concerns for ISU included: a clear design for assessment procedures, faculty diversity, diverse settings for field placements.

Description Project Activities

ISU established an MCD team with education faculty to investigate the current level of preparedness, among school of education students at the undergraduate and graduate level, to work with diverse populations.  ISU conducted a summer workshop to “develop an assessment strategy for determining Indiana State’s current diversity elements, both systemic and categorical, which determine the preparedness of teacher candidates for working with diverse populations of students.”  The summer workshop identified areas of assessment needs 1) curriculum content, 2) student experiences, and 3) faculty knowledge base.  Workshop outcomes included modifications to assessments and the development of a curriculum map.
