Multicultural Diversity
Assessment Dissemination Project

New Mexico State University

Description of University

Enrollment at NMSU is approximately 16,500.  They have a 40% minority population.  Las Cruces itself has a 50%+ minority population (mostly Hispanic).  NMSU is an HSI (Hispanic Serving Institution).  Original goals/concerns included: transforming personnel’s thinking toward diversity, promoting diversity education in various programs/departments.

Description of Project Activities

NMSU has an MCD emphasis in Teacher Education.  Many faculty members require an “anti-racist” lesson in their pedagogy courses. Candidates are evaluated at the beginning and end of each semester by faculty and classroom teachers to determine their progress on meeting competencies and national standards.  Candidates are also assessed at the end of their student teaching experience or internship via portfolio. Questionnaires are sent to graduates and employers every 2-3 years to determine competency. NMSU’s evaluation design uses multiple evaluation points and employs comprehensive assessments with established cut-off points (in the case or practica evaluations).  Evaluations are embedded into the program.
